Grains - more or less?

Let’s delve a little into the world of grains - less or more.

As we know grains indicate the age of a tree. EW trees it is believed add a new bark each year. So a 15 grain bat would likely have been growing for 15 years.

In our experience, more grains does not equate to better performance. As long as you have a stick with 6+ grains, pressed and prepared well they should all perform roughly the same overtime.

Bats with a lot of grains tend to reach their peak a little sooner but also seem to break up sooner as grains open up over time. Due to the hype manufacturers tend to ask for a premium for bats with lots of grains usually rating them as Super Select, professional or players willow. These bats offer very poor value for money.

Our recommendation for an average park, club or grade cricketer is to choose one with 7-9 grains. These bats offer the best value. Choose a bat that picks up light, feels good in your hands and pings well.

Instead use our #handprepservice which includes oiling, hand knocking, playing in a bat slowly to suit each cleft and you are sure to get the best results.
